There are scores of ways to celebrate the Fourth of July on Friday. Here are a few suggestions.

Day at the movies

The Fourth of July typically anchors a blockbuster movie weekend, but The Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway, celebrates the holiday itself with film.

Tucson’s home for independent, alternative films has a full day planned, starting with a food truck from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

“Task Force,” the 1949 Hollywood Navy classic starring Gary Cooper, screens at noon and is presented by Liberty Watch Radio and Inside Track. Admission is $6.

The 50th anniversary, digital restoration of a “A Hard Day’s Night” starts its run at the Loft with a 3 p.m. screening that includes a free raffle to win prizes, including limited edition 40th anniversary movie posters, Beatles merchandise, Zia gift cards and more. Admission is $9.25.

The Loft has made an Independence Day tradition of hosting the “Team America: World Police” Sing-A-Long and Curse-A-Thon. For the uninitiated, “Team America” is the 2004 action comedy from the mad minds of the “South Park” creators — puppet commandos are on a mission to save the world from a terrorist plot masterminded by North Korea’s former leader Kim Jong-il. The event starts at 6 p.m. and admission is $8 (no one under 17 admitted without an adult guardian).

Cheer on the team

Baseball may be gone, but FC Tucson, our city’s semi-professional soccer club, picks up the tradition of fireworks at the Kino Sports Complex on Friday.

The inaugural “Fourth of July Blast” starts at 7:30 p.m. when FC Tucson hosts Albuquerque Sol FC in the third and final match of the Southwestern Showdown — the winner takes home the “The Golden Rattler” rivalry trophy.

The pyrotechnics are set to get underway about 30 minutes after the game ends at Kino North Stadium, 2817 E. Ajo Way. Admission is $10. Then you can get back to watching the World Cup. 

Keepin’ it country

Nothing says country better than fireworks and a free concert by Tucson’s own Greg Spivey.

The countdown to the Marana Star Spangled Spectacular started last week on the town’s website — marana.com

Country singer Greg Spivey and his band will perform at Crossroads at Silverbell Park, 7548 N. Silverbell Road in Marana.

The event — with kids activities, a water slide, food vendors and KOLD’s Dan Marries as the emcee — starts at 6, the concert at 7 and the fireworks at 9 (weather permitting).

Glamour, rhinestones and fringe

Surly Wench Pub’s Black Cherry Burlesque takes the stage on the first Friday of every month. And the troupe does an Independence Day-themed show each July.

This year the stars aligned and the Fourth is the first Friday, which means a Fourth of July Spectacular with a mix of traditional and neo-burlesque styles.
